Creating a Self Care Routine That Actually Works

Okay…let’s get real for a minute. If I say self-care will you say something like:

“I don’t have time for that” or “It just seems so selfish.”

People…self-care is not sitting on the couch and eating bon bons. That is self-indulgence and yes that is selfish especially when the world you are responsible for is shifting around you.

I want to talk about true self-care. According to this Wikipedia definition, self-care is any necessary human regulatory function which is under individual control, deliberate and self-initiated. I could not love this description more. In my book Need More Time? I CAN Help, I talk about the productivity pillar that sets you apart from other small business owners, entrepreneurs, parents or any other category you find yourself in.

Initiate Self Care is the first way to increase your productivity! It is also the “I” in my I CAN acronym. By stepping back and taking care of you, your body and your essence will create more time in your day to day life, thus allowing you to be focused, effective and efficient.

When you maintain your body then you are positioning yourself to have more energy, to have more stamina, to be more creative and to ultimately be more effective in work and in life.

Let me ask you this…would you think you were acting selfish each time you got your tires rotated or your car’s oil changed? No, of course not. It is what you do to maintain the integrity and the sustainability of the vehicle. If we don’t care of our cars, they breakdown sooner and more easily. Same is true for our bodies.

Maintenance Self-Care

I am going to go a step further and proclaim that not all self-care is equal. I have experienced and witnessed two levels of self-care. The first level being Maintenance Care which includes how you eat, how you move (exercise) and how you rest. Creating a routine around this depends on your priorities and goals. I put this into its own category because this addresses your body on the most physiological level. It’s simple science really. If you do not maintain and nurture the body you have been given, it will break down at a higher rate than others who do maintain their body. Disease and injuries naturally occur to everyone. However, when you practice self-care, then your position your body to repair and heal much quicker. Make sense?

To create a self care routine around your maintenance care, it is important to figure out your priorities and goals. What is important to you? Do you eat well and want to focus on more movement and better rest? Do you need to work on nourishing your body instead of just feeding it? Let me share with you my list as a jumping off point for you.

My Maintenance Self-Care Goals/Routine:

  1. Nourish my body
    1. Cook healthier options
    2. Meal Prep to ensure I follow through with the healthier options
    3. Create alternatives for my emotional eating triggers
  2. Move my body
    1. Daily yoga and stretching
    2. Daily work towards my 5k goal in September (follow my journey HERE)
    3. Whole body daily strength training
  3. Rest my body
    1. Meditation daily
    2. Go to be by 10:30 each night
    3. Sleep in on the weekends

Restorative Self-Care

The second level of self-care is Restorative Self-Care. This is where deep healing and change happens. I believe that we are all made up of our bodies and our psyche or essence. While they are intricately woven, they need to be nurtured separately and specifically. This is where restorative self-care comes in. These self-care activities are made up of what you like to do. These activities create joy and happiness in your day to day life and renew your essence.

What are they? Only you can decide.

Right now, write a list of what you like to do. Write down as many things as you can think of, even if you have not done these activities in a while. Go ahead…I’ll wait.

[Here is a really cool music track to help you creatively focus and write your list.]

Have your list? GREAT JOB. Now take your top three to five items and DO THEM. Schedule them in your busy life as if they are appointments. Carve out time in your daily and weekly life to make these favorites happen. Make time with yourself to accomplish these essence essentials. Your psyche will LOVE you for it.

There are so many articles out there about how productive, successful people spend their mornings, or their self-care routine. Truth is…if it doesn’t speak to you, you will never make it a routine. The choices you make to manage and restore yourself have to move you to the point of action.

I am going to also share my favorites as a jumping off point for you and to help get those creative ideas flowing.

My Restorative Goals/Routine:

  1. Read
  2. Create
  3. Explore
  4. Family time
  5. Learn

Not rocket science but it makes me happy.
